  • PB4L – What is it all about?

    PB4L ….has your child come home using this term? Have you known what he was saying or have you thought that perhaps he is learning a new language at school?!! … PB4L is English, but it is also a language of sorts …for us, it’s the language of behaviour.

    PB4L stands for Positive Behaviour For Learning and it is a framework for improving academic and social behaviour at school. Positive Behaviour for Learning believes:

    • positive behaviour can be learnt and difficult and disruptive behaviour can be unlearnt;
    • individual children are not a ‘problem’ – we need to change the environment around them to support positive behaviour;
    • punishing and isolating children doesn’t bring about long-term and sustainable changes in behaviour;
    • we need to concentrate on a small number of evidence-based programmes and frameworks that we know work;
    • there are no quick fixes. Behaviour change takes time.

    At St. Mary’s, our PB4L values are: Respect, Care and Responsibility-  Whakaute, Atawhaitia , Takohanga. While we are still in a developing stage of the PB4L programme, we have already seen significant positive behaviour changes within our school.  Our children are continually learning what it means to show Respect, Care and Responsibility and continuously make great efforts to show these values. We have regular PB4L lessons and school-wide incentives which help our children to understand even more the importance of displaying our PB4L values.

    Something to think about – a quote by John Herner which can be seen as an underlying theme of PB4L …..

    “If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.”

    “If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.”

    ”If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.”

    “If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach.”

    “If a child doesn’t know how to behave,   we…            ….teach?           ….punish?

    “Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others ?”
